Luxury Vinyl Plank

Hard-Wearing, And Only As Flat As What Is Under It.

Vinyl plank handles moisture better than wood-based products, which is why it comes up so often for kitchens, entries, laundry rooms and basements. It is also thin and flexible, so a dip or a ridge in the subfloor shows straight through it. Most of the work in a good vinyl floor is the preparation underneath.

  • Kitchens, entries, laundry rooms, basements and open-plan floors
  • Subfloor flattened before the planks go down
  • Self-levelling where the base needs more than patching
  • Fitted cleanly to walls, doorways and cabinets
  • Transitions to carpet, tile and other flooring

How A Vinyl Floor Goes In

Flat First, Then Fast.

  1. 01

    Look at the space

The rooms, the existing flooring, and where the new floor meets carpet, tile or other surfaces.

  2. 02

    Check the subfloor

Vinyl plank needs a flat base. Dips and high spots are checked against what the product’s installation instructions allow.

  3. 03

    Prepare the base

Old flooring removed where it applies, then patching or self-levelling so the floor is within tolerance.

  4. 04

    Lay out and install

End joints staggered and the rows planned so the cuts at the walls are not slivers, then the planks installed room by room.

  5. 05

    Finish the details

Transitions, trim and doorways, then a walkthrough of the finished floor.

Common Questions

Vinyl Plank Questions

Is vinyl plank flooring waterproof?

Many vinyl plank products are waterproof as a material, which is a big part of their appeal. The floor as a whole is a different matter: water can still get through the joints and around the edges to the subfloor underneath. Vinyl plank copes with spills and damp far better than laminate or wood, but a flood is still a flood.

Does the subfloor need to be level for vinyl plank?

It needs to be flat, which is not quite the same thing. Vinyl plank follows whatever is underneath it, so dips and ridges show through and can stress the joints. Each product states how much variation it tolerates, and patching or self-levelling brings the floor within that.

Can vinyl plank go over my existing floor?

Sometimes. It can often go over a flat, sound, well-bonded hard floor, but not over carpet, and not over anything cushioned, uneven or loose. The product’s instructions say what it can go over, and the existing floor has to be looked at to know.

Is vinyl plank a good choice for a basement?

Often, yes. It tolerates moisture better than laminate or wood, and it can go over a concrete slab once the slab is flat and its moisture has been checked against the product’s limits.

Can I buy my own vinyl plank?

Yes. It is worth confirming the specific product and quantity before ordering, so the preparation and installation can be planned around it.
