Solid Or Engineered

Real Wood, Chosen Room By Room.

Solid hardwood is a traditional choice that can be refinished over a long life. Engineered hardwood puts a real wood wear layer over a dimensionally stable core, so it is often considered where solid wood is less practical, including over concrete or in rooms with more variation in conditions. Both respond to moisture, which is why the right one depends on the room and the subfloor rather than on a general rule.

  • Solid hardwood, which can be sanded and refinished over its life
  • Engineered hardwood, with a real wood wear layer over a stable core
  • Subfloor checked for flatness, fasteners, squeaks and moisture first
  • Board direction and the starting line planned around the room

How A Hardwood Floor Goes In

Most Of A Good Floor Happens Before The First Board.

  1. 01

    Look at the space

The rooms involved, the existing flooring, and how the new floor will meet the floors and doorways around it.

  2. 02

    Check moisture and flatness

Wood moves with moisture, so the subfloor and the conditions in the house are worth knowing about before the boards arrive.

  3. 03

    Prepare the subfloor

Loose fasteners and squeaks dealt with, and high or low spots corrected, so the floor sits flat and stays quiet.

  4. 04

    Lay out and install

The board direction and starting line set out, then the floor installed by the method the product and the subfloor call for.

  5. 05

    Finish the details

Thresholds, trim and transitions, then a walkthrough of the finished floor.

Common Questions

Hardwood & Engineered Questions

Is engineered hardwood waterproof?

No. Engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable than solid wood, so it copes better with changes in humidity, but it is still wood, and standing water or a leak left sitting on it will damage it. For laundry rooms, entries and basements where water is a real risk, vinyl plank is usually the more practical choice.

What is the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?

Solid hardwood is one piece of wood all the way through and can be sanded and refinished several times. Engineered hardwood has a real wood wear layer bonded over a layered core that resists movement, which makes it an option in places solid wood is not, such as over concrete. How many times it can be refinished depends on the thickness of that wear layer.

Can hardwood go over a concrete floor?

Solid hardwood generally should not go directly over concrete. Engineered hardwood can, glued down or floated depending on the product, once the slab is flat and its moisture is within the manufacturer’s limits.

Can I buy my own hardwood?

Yes, many homeowners choose and buy their own flooring. It is worth confirming the specific product and quantity before ordering, so the preparation and installation can be planned around it.

How long does hardwood floor installation take?

It depends on the square footage, the product, the condition of the subfloor and how much preparation it needs. A realistic timeframe can be given once the space and the scope are known.
